Cubs Receive Highest Award
In a ceremony on Wednesday 18th June, three Cessnock Cub Scout members joined the list of Australian Cubs that have earnt the highest award available to the Cub Scout section, the Grey Wolf. What makes this event even more special is the fact that these three youth are the first in Cessnock to ever receive this distinction!
The Grey Wolf Award is the pinnacle of the Cub Scout Award scheme, having replaced the Yellow Cord in 2005. The last Cessnock Cub to have earned the old Yellow Cord Award was in 2004, with no Cubs having attempted this level since then. On Wednesday night the three Cessnock youth were presented their award by the Regional Commissioner (Cub Scout) David Main, District Cub Scout Leader (Lower Hunter) John Gibson, and District Commissioner (Lower Hunter) Trish Palmer.
The Grey Wolf Award is not a quick or simple award to acheive, and generally follows 1 - 2 years of committed and dedicated work gaining the various Acheivment Badges and the Boomerang Awards. To qualify for the Grey Wolf a Cub must:
- Complete the Gold Boomerang Award; and
- Complete four level 2 Achievment badges (1 from each of the 4 categories); and
- Completed one Special Interest badge; and
- Attend 2 Pack Council meetings in the past 12 months; and
- In the past 12 months, attend 4 outdoor activities:
- One of which must be an overnight camp;
- One of which must be an inter-Pack activity;
- One of which must include an activity where the Cub plans and leads a bushwalk of at least 2 hours duration with a Leader and at least 3 (not more than 6) other Cub Scouts.
- Develop and present a resource for their Six or Pack based on their understanding of the Jungle Books.
These youth should be extremely proud of this achievment and it is a real credit to the dedication of our Cub Leaders to have three Cub members reach this level. We are extremely fortunate to have Leaders that are so dedicated to the youth and willing to help them achieve their very best.
