100 Good Turns

As part of the 2008 Centenary celebrations, every Youth Member and Adult Leader in Scouts Australia NSW has been encouraged to participate in the 100 Good Turns programme, with the aim of completing 1 million Good Turns in NSW and 6 million across Australia!

Scouting’s founder, Robert Baden-Powell said “Good Turns” are part of being a Scout. They can be done by a small kindness or by just being polite to others. He said that all Scouts should do at least one Good Turn every day and that for it to be a proper Good Turn it should not be talked about but kept to oneself. 100 years later, it is one of our “traditions”.

For this Centenary year of Australian Scouting, the Centenary committee initiated the idea of 100 Good Turns by every Scout in Australia. We are also inviting community leaders to joins us.

Good Turns can be done around the home, school, workplace, church, temple, mosque, community hall, scout hall or den, etc., to individuals or groups, to communities through environmental projects or other citizenship activities. They can be small or large. You may even do “team” Good Turns, such as cleaning up a lake or shopping for elderly people. Swapping ideas for Good Turns could be part of the weekly program for a short while.

The Good Turn is carrying out the Scout Promise in a practical and useful way - a great example to the community. We may even hear about some, in a round-about way of course!
